Reducing Noise Pollution in the Home

Noise pollution is environmental noise, as from vehicles or machinery that is annoying, distracting, or physically harmful. The Physical effects of noise pollution can include hearing loss, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), stress, and sleeplessness. High stress levels can cause the body to release excess amounts of cortisol, the stress hormone; this has many adverse physical effects. Too much cortisol can cause bone and muscle to deteriorate making them weak and fragile. High levels of this hormone can also negatively affect the body’s ability to heal and ward off illness.

So what can you do to reduce the amount of noise pollution in your environment? There are a number of options but a good place to start is to install a range hood fan that is much quieter than the standard fan. Since much time is spent in the kitchen standing close to the fan a loud fan can cause any number of problems associated with prolonged exposure to noise pollution. Acrylic Maintenance Part II - Deep Scratches

Small minor scratches can usually be removed using an automotive polishing compound or car wax.

Deep scratches can be removed by doing the following:

1. Mark the scratch with a dark colour marker, making sure that the ink reaches into the scratch.
2. Sand the scratch and the area around it with a 400-grit sandpaper. Always use water as a lubricant while sanding.
3. Sand it smoothly until the entire dark colour marker has been removed. DO NOT exert too much force. Make sure that you sand an area larger than the actual scratch so that it will blend into the surrounding acrylic. Repeat the first three steps until the scratch is completely gone.
4. Sand the area with progressively finer grits (600, 800, 1200, etc.) of sandpapers and water as a lubricant until the area is eventually smooth.
5. Finally, finish the repair by polishing with an automotive polishing compound, such as car wax.

This entire scratch removal process should only last for 10 minutes maximum.

Acrylic Maintenance Part I

To protect your acrylic bathtubs surface, it should be cleaned only with a non-abrasive liquid bathroom cleaner, made specifically for acrylic.

DO NOT use abrasive powder, dry cleaning detergent, bleach, nail polish remover, petroleum distillates or other strong solvents to clean the surface of your bathtub. Never use a scraper, a metal brush or anything that could scratch or damage the surface.

If you have a resistant stain, you can use de-natured alcohol to try and remove it. Keep in mind that de-natured alcohol is toxic; therefore, please wear gloves at all times during cleaning and follow the safety instructions in your installation manual.

For paint stains, please use Turpentine, and use Wooden spatula with a moist cloth for plaster residue.
Additionally, if you want to remove fine scratches, the best result is to use car wax.

The beauty of acrylic products is that if it starts looking slightly worn out, you can lightly sand it down with sandpapers to achieve a brand new look once again!

When you are choosing between air jetted bathtubs and whirlpool system bathtubs, it really depends on what kind of experience you are looking for. If you want a vigorous and more thorough massage, the whirlpool jetting system will be perfect for you; however, if you are looking for a more relaxing and zen experience, then you might want to go with the air massage system.

The whirlpool jets have more powerful action and work best for targeting specific muscles. If you have an injury or do regular workouts, the whirlpool jets work perfectly to relax the muscles. However, please keep in mind that whirlpool jets require regular flushing.

Air jets give a gentle bubbling action and can handle the use of bubble baths, oils, and bath salts while whirlpool jets cannot. It offers the combination of all the therapeutic elements necessary for optimal relaxation. Additionally, the motor of an air jetted system is much quieter than a whirlpool system, and it is also cleaner than a whirlpool jetted bathtub because it does not recycle the water.

Valley O3 System

Valley’s O3 system is an ingenious system that is small and compact, and it is designed to to facilitate the installation of a whirlpool or an air jet system easier. The air compressor pushes ozone throughout the piping or air channels of the massage systems. It has the advantage of improving the ozone production as it increases the volume of O3 and acts as an electronic control that controls all sanitation process of your massage bathtub. Additionally, there is an LED on the keypad which displays the various stages of the cycle when in process.

The O3 system has probes that detect water in the bathtub. When this happens, the system will automatically activate the waiting mode until the bathtub is empty.
When the bathtub is empty, the O3 system turns on a one-hour-delay timer and the system will then start the cleaning process for 15 minutes to sanitize the whirlpool piping or the air channel of the bathtub.

Another great thing about Valley’s O3 system is that there is no maintenance required. The O3 system is perfect for our bathtub massage systems because its major role is to act as a water purifier, ensuring that fresh water is always being supplied and minimizing dirt residues.

What is the difference between a Pressure Balance Valve and a Thermostatic Valve?

Have you ever seen in the movies when someone is in the shower and another person flushes the toilet and the water temperature in the shower changes? Or does this often happen to you?

This is because the pressure balance valve is missing!
The pressure balance valve prevents that from happening by reacting to the changes in the pressure of the delivery water. Both hot and cold water are fed to the pressure balance valve, and it makes sure that the water leaving the pressure balance valve is a constant mixture of both, even if the pressure of the two sources changes.
Since the valve can prevent scalding, they are now required in most new home construction. One may also invest in a new pressure balance valve to replace an old style valve in an older home; however, please keep in mind that a certified plumber is usually needed for the installation.

One major disadvantage of a pressure balance valve is that it can provide limited flow rate control, whereas a thermostatic valve provides a much better temperature control and a full range of flow rate control.

Thermostatic valves are more than double the cost of a pressure balance valve, but it delivers a more comfortable shower experience. Both valves serve the same purpose but aren’t exactly the same, and they are essential for bathroom plumbing. One Piece Toilet or Two Piece Toilet

One of the many common questions we usually are asked by our customers include: “What do you recommend, one piece toilets, or two piece? And what is the difference between the two?” When buying a toilet, it always depends on the person that is purchasing it.

Starting off with the one piece, you don’t have to assemble anything, because the tank and the bowl are molded together, whereas you have to assemble the tank and bowl together for the two piece. Although, if you are looking for the better price, then the one-piece is usually more expensive. But for the one piece, aside from easy to install, since there are no bolts or bolt holes holding the tank, it is much easier to clean than the two piece. Another benefit is that there is less chance of leakage compared to the two piece. Also, the Eurovit one piece toilets provide an option of a soft close seat, some other brands might also. Cons about the one piece could be that the older one piece toilets did not flush very well, but the same can be said for the newer 1.6 GPF two piece toilets. The reason that two piece toilets are less expensive is because the tank and the bowl are sold separately. Although the lower price may seem appealing, keep in mind that leakage over time can create an un-sanitary environment, and could ruin the flooring in your bathroom.

Building By-Law Amendments for Green Homes

The intent of this bulletin is to advise homeowners and contractors as to new Building By-Law requirements that will apply to all one and tow family building permit applications received on or latter September 5, 2008
Vancouver City Council has committed to the following targets for greenhouse gas (GHG) reductions:
1. Reduce community GHG emissions by 33% below current levels by 2020 ,and
2. All new construction in Vancouver must be (GHG) –neutral by 2030.
As a result two separate green building strategies are under development and implementation, the first for single-family and two-family homes, and the second for larger residential, commercial, and industrial buildings.

On June 26, 2008, City Council approved amendments to the Vancouver Building By-law (By –Law #9691) to promote energy efficient design and construction best practices in one and two-family dwellings. The By-Law amendments, collectively known as the Green Homes Program, will be enacted on September 5, 2008. The following provides a brief summary of these new requirements:

o Increased insulation for above-grade wood frame exterior walls. The amount of insulation mow mandated typically requires the use of 2x6 wall studs rather than 2x4 constructions.
o Increased insulation for below-grade basement exterior walls. Insulation is now required over the entire inside face of the foundation wall.
o Concrete floors slabs in basements or in slab-on-grade construction are now required to have insulation on the underside of the floor slab. The current exemption for the floors not using a radiant floor heating system has been removed ;as a result, concrete floor slabs in basements and in slab-on-grade construction now require insulation on the underside of the slab.
o All windows must now meet a minimum thermal insulation performance level. Windows witch have an Energy Star rating will meet this requirement.
o 40% of permanent light fixtures in homes must be hard –wired to not accept incandescent or halogen bulbs. In areas of the home where lights are to be left on for long periods, compact fluorescent (CFL) or light-emitting diode (LED) technology is better suited for the task.
o An in-home display unit for electricity consumption must now be installed in the home. This meter will provide instantaneous data on electricity usage, and should be placed in a area where is easily viewed, such as the front hall or kitchen.
o Insulation must be wrapped around all electrically-powered hot water heaters and on portion the piping leading to and from both electric and gas powered water heaters
o Insulation is required on the entire hot water piping network, if the network is a constant –recirculation system.
o All gas-fuelled fireplaces are required to use electronic ignition and be direct-vented. Direct-venting eliminates the need for a chimney, instead drawing combustion air and exhausting to the outside through a vent immediately behind the fireplace. This requirement is not intended to apply to gas-fuelled log sets or log sets igniters.
o All toilets must be of dual-flush design. These toilets help to minimize the consumption of potable water by allowing the user to select the appropriate flushing volumes.
o A heat recover ventilator (HRV) must be installed in every new home. An HRV provides continues ventilation while minimizing energy losses by transferring heat from exhaust to incoming air.
o Two 50mm diameter (2inch) PVC pipes running from the building’s service room to the attic space must be installed. These conducts will allow for the future addition of roof-mounted solar energy generation system.
o A cable raceway (conduit) from the building’s electrical panel to the garage must be installed leading to an empty outlet box in the garage. This raceway will allow for future installation of an electric vehicle charging system.
o An EnerGuide Rating Service audit must be carried out on all new homes. This audit provides owners and builder with a 3rd party evaluation of the expected energy efficiency of the home, and the completed ERS report must be submitted to the Chief Building Official prior to final inspection.
